The Dale Center for the Study of War & Society is proud to host events and conferences and sponsor programs related to the study of conflict and culture.

McCarthy Lecture Speaker Sabastian Junger 2017

Events:

Lt. Col. John H. Dale Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series in International Security and Global Policy brings prominent, internationally-known speakers to Hattiesburg every other year.
 
Richard McCarthy Lecture Series brings together students, faculty, and community members to access cutting-edge research in the field of military history and war and society every year.
 

Programs:

General Buford "Buff" Blount Professorship in Military History provides funding for the work of a Souther Miss historian member engaged in research toward the publication of a major study in the field of War and Society.
 
103rd Infantry Division World War II Archive highlights the 103d Infantry Division (Cactus) World War II Association’s document collection, memorabilia, books, and webpage at Southern Miss--a treasure trove for researchers of World War II in Europe.
 
War Stories: Civil War & Reconstruction Governors of Mississippi provides unparalleled access to a true cross-section of Mississippi experiences throughout the U.S. Civil War era, which is revolutionizing how scholars, teachers, students, and the public approach this definitive American conflict.
 
War Stories: National Guard is the Dale Center's project to gather the oral histories of both serving Mississippi National Guardsmen and veterans to facilitate research into the National Guard's changing roles in the twenty-first century. 
 
DPAA Defense POW/MIA Fellowship established the Dale Center as one of a handful of institutions in the country to host a post-doctoral fellow engaged in researching America's post-1941 missing service personnel for the Department of Defense. 
 
Military Officer Training highlights our graduate program's efforts to educate the next generation of officers for the U. S. military.

Conferences: 

Society for Military History's 2013 Annual Meeting was hosted by the Dale Center in New Orleans, Louisiana with over five hundred participants. 
 
Waging Peace Conference was a scholarly meeting hosted by the Dale Center in 2016 that brought together over one hundred historians studying the historic transition from war to peace.

Past Programs:

War & Society Roundtable, a joint community and university monthly reading group than ran from 2006 to 2022, which focused on a different war and society book each month of the academic year.
