Mathematics

With mathematics, you are always in demand

Change is accelerating, but fundamentals remain constant and beautiful. Because of their fundamental training, mathematics majors keep pace with our changing world. Mathematical modeling is applicable to topics ranging from aircraft design to the spread of viruses. The logical approach of a mathematician is valued in professions such as law and medicine. Modeling and logic together are fundamental for digital manufacturing and robotics. Finally, there is a significant need for good mathematics teachers.

What Will I Learn?

Every mathematical topic is alluring as well as the foundation for practical work.

  • Calculus provides the foundation for modern science and engineering.
  • Probability and Statistics are the pillars that support Data Analysis.
  • Numerical Analysis helps analyze complex models.
  • Doing proofs teaches us to be highly precise when analyzing a subject.
  • Licensure majors learn pedagogical skills applicable every day in their classrooms.
  • Digital manufacturing can be used to apply all the above skills and enhance them.

The Wright W. and Annie Rae Cross Endowment for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics supports undergraduate research with scholarships, travel support, equipment support and more. Qualified students complete assigned or self-generated projects with a research mentor. Recent project topics include data analysis to find characteristics of successful college students, probability theory to analyze on-line gaming revenues, celestial mechanics to find special types of central configurations and special orbits for certain objects, and mathematical biology to investigate the Allee Effects due to hunting cooperation in food chain models.

Our Mathematics Undergraduate Research Scholarships are provided by the Wright W. and Annie Rea Cross Endowment with a stipend of up to $2,000 for each year.

Use Mathematics in our Maker Space

In the Eagle Maker Hub, Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ’s first public Maker Space, you can apply mathematical skills in digital manufacturing and robotics. Dr. Anna Wan, the founding director, routinely makes connections between mathematics, computing, engineering, art and pedagogy. These connections feature the applicability of mathematics as well as its intrinsic beauty. Being able to make such connections across disciplines will add value to your education, too.

Professional Licensure Disclosure

Programs at the University of Southern Mississippi that prepare students for licensure in Mathematics (K-12) are designed to meet the licensure standards set by the Mississippi Department of Education.

Students seeking licensure in another state are advised to contact the appropriate licensing board in that state to determine specific requirements of guidelines for reciprocity. For information about professional licensure determinations made to comply with federal regulations requiring disclosures as to whether a program that is marketed or designed to lead to licensure or state certification leads to professional licensure or state certification, see the following:
