After high school, I wanted to continue my education at a school that was inclusive and where I felt like more than just a number.
When I toured ӣƵ in 2014, it felt like a place where I could grow as an individual and much more. I completed my undergraduate studies in Biological Sciences at ӣƵ in 2018. I decided to return to ӣƵ for my master’s degree because I knew that I would be supported during the program and well equipped afterwards.
I chose to pursue a Master's in Biomedical Sciences because I wanted to strengthen my skills and expand my knowledge base in preparation for medical school.
Why Biomedical Sciences? It has always intrigued me because it gives me the opportunity to understand and think critically about the mechanisms of development and function of both humans and other existing organisms. Therefore, I chose to pursue a Master's in Biomedical Sciences because I wanted to strengthen my skills and expand my knowledge base in preparation for medical school.
Throughout this program, I’ve been able to further cultivate my study skills. I’ve learned how to think critically and analyze complex scientific content. In addition, I was able to strengthen my communication skills via presenting in class and collaborating with my cohort.
Among esteemed faculty, the professors that have been truly influential during my development are Dr. Julie Pigza, assistant professor of organic chemistry, and Dr. Janet Donaldson, professor of microbiology. I believe they have taught me valuable lessons both inside and outside of the classroom. They have helped me see that I can do hard things and I’m capable of anything that I set my mind to! I think they are both exceptional professors and human beings.
If you are a prospective student, come into this program with an open mind. You are not your mistakes and know that what you bring to the table is valuable! If you choose to continue your education at ӣƵ, you will hear, “Leave Southern Miss better than you found it,” frequently. That is going to look different for everyone, but take the opportunity to grow, connect with others, and challenge yourself. Lastly, be intentional during your journey and leave no room for fear!
I believe in going where you are supported and celebrated. At ӣƵ, you will be supported in your academic endeavors and celebrated during your journey!
