WGS helped me confirm this goal & my career ambition to become a physician specializing in obstetrics/gynecology. As well, I wish to be a mentor to young girls in the future who aspire to be more than what their society prescribes.
Growing up in Nigeria as a young girl, society told me to aspire to be great, but not too great since that would hurt the man's ego. I would watch the daily news and see that despite how rich the country was, women were still dying from childbirth. Women were policy makers, yet they were treated like their opinions did not matter, and I wondered why.
It was social situations such as these combined with my love for the biomedical sciences that inspired my interest in women's and gender studies. The WGS minor at Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ enabled me to explore different approaches to understanding gender, ranging from history to sociology to public health. I believe that leaving this world without making an impact, no matter how small, is like living a purposeless life, and the impact I want to make is on women's health.
